Review
One of the healthiest places to eat in Amsterdam, the Vliegende Schotel (Flying Saucer) restaurant offers an extremely varied, mainly vegetarian menu. For those who prefer, there are three fish dishes available; the Nova Scotia which comprises organic smoked salmon and mackerel with broccoli and fish sauce, the Harderfilet, organic sea fish with dill pesto and butter sauce, and a Norwegian fish salad of tuna, salmon, and mackerel. A friendly bohemian atmosphere in which to dine, the restaurant is divided into two spacious rooms, with eight tables in each, and in one a sofa where one may sit and access the internet. The Vliegende Schotel is fully licensed to sell beers, wines, and spirits. Budels organic beers dominate, along with wines from France, Spain, Italy and Portugal.
Excellent value for money, especially the Dag Schotel (Dish Of The Day) and the soup of the day. If you're dining with friends, then try sharing a fondue along with your salads or main dishes for a great cheese experience. For a taste of India try the Kofta when available. The home made banana cream pie could also be considered "a must". Beware, the fish may take some time to cook, so order a starter if you're hungry. As the sign above the counter clearly states there's "no fast food", so be prepared to wait a bit at peak times. I have always found the service to be good, and the staff friendly, even when it gets busy. For more info check out their website; especially their amusing self-made animation found as number 9 under "fotos/images".
