Amsterdam has the reputation for being a truly international city with restaurants offering food from every corner of the globe, and one might be forgiven for forgetting that the Nederlands has it's very own unique cuisine. Situated on a side street off the busy and bustling Leidseplein, De Blauwe Hollander offers an excellent selection of traditional Dutch dishes prepared in a homely style. From Erwtensoep (hearty pea soup with rye bread), home made cheese croquettes, fresh herring with red beet root salad and pickles, stamppot (typical Dutch dish of mashed potatoes, vegetables, sauerkraut, and bacon, sausage, or meatballs), through mussels served with herb butter, bread, and a selection of three sauces, to stewed eel with herbs, mashed potatoes, and butter sauce, one may experience wholesomeness of these dishes in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. No Dutch restaurant would be complete without some superior apple pie, pancakes, and delightful mini pancakes served with butter and a sprinkling of icing sugar known as poffertjes. De Blauwe Hollander also offers main courses of salmon, chicken, pork, veal, steak, and meatballs. To compliment your dining experience the bar offers speciality old and young Jenevers, and locally brewed Brouwerij 'tij beers. Between midday and 5pm one may also partake of sandwiches, traditional Dutch brunch of fried eggs with cheese, ham, and bacon, and pancakes with chocolate, cheese, bacon, apple, peach, pineapple, or mixed fruit, dusted with icing sugar, and served with syrup. Under new management as of mid 2009, De Blauwe Hollander dedicates itself to providing top quality Dutch cuisine at reasonable prices, and in traditional style.
